WHAT IS VACUUM INSULATED GLASS AND WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?

THERMGLASS

  • vacuum insulated glass is a type of glazing that consists of two or more glass panes separated by a vacuum or low pressure-gas filled space. It is designed to provide high thermal insulation and reduce heat transfer. between the interior and exterior of buildings. 
  • A typical VIG unit is produced with two panes of annealed or tempered float glass which is separated by .05 to 1.7cm steel or ceramic pillars in height. The edge is connected with a solder which creates a vacuum chamber. The seal must contain less 0.1pa pressure in order to keep the stability of vacuum. A getter is applied inside of the vacuum chamber, sealing the edges of glasses.
    The air is removed in aa vacuum inlet for up to 3 hours. sealing up the inlet to form a vacuum Chamber. The end product provides for a lightweight IG unit with 4x performance then typical double glazed units   heat transfer performance on the VIG structure Heat transfer is contained creating a glass panes with extreme performance. The space between the glass is filled with a low conductivity glass such as argon or krypton
  • The key principle behind VIG is that vacuum is a poor conductor of heat so the absence of air or gas molecules between the glass panes significantly reduces heat transfer by conduction or convection.  This results in improved thermal insulation properties compared to traditional double or triple pane glazing units. 
  • The benefits of vacuum insulated glass include enhanced thermal insulation performance,  reducing  heat loss or gain through windows. This contributes to reduced heating and cooling costs.  The low heat transfer across glass panes minimizes the potential for condensation to form on the interior surface, helping maintain a clearer view and reducing the risk of mold. This bodes well for the medical industry. Vacuum glass has a thinner profile then standard IGU's, and achieves comparable thermal performance to thicker conventional glazing units. This allows for slimmer profiles, maximizing the amount of natural light entering a space while maintaining insulation.  The vacuum space acts as a natural sound barrier. Noise reduction is reduced from the outside to the inside of a building. 
  •  Vacuum insulated glass is primarily used in advanced architectural applications where energy efficiency thermal performance are critical, such as high performance windows, curtain walls, and facade systems. 
  • Vacuum glass is able to be used to enhance features of newer technological advancements in the use of glass such as electrochromic glass, and photovoltaic glass (solar) as a substrate. Dynamic comfort control and energy savings glass are the next wave of high performance glass products. Solar glass is enhanced using vacuum glass as well. By reducing temperature fluctuations and keeping a constant temperature  solar panels generate increased energy.  Combining VIG with solar glass offers sleek and modern appearance, while harnessing solar energy for sustainable power generation.
