The heat gain through glass consists of solar radiation and conduction. Solar radiation can be scattered or diffused, absorbed and scattered in the atmosphere the Conduction heat occurs due to the difference in temperature. on either side of the glass. As long as outdoor temperature is greater than indoor air temperature and it is negative. Solar radiation is always if positive if the indoor air temperature is greater.  for all retrofit glazing, the goals are to provide the best performance to prevent window heat loss. Vacuum glass is light and can provides R 14 insulation.
