Harold McMaster invented the process for tempering flat glass. In 1948 he started Permaglass in Genoa Ohio. Starting off in the automotive markets he quickly became the largest supplier to the auto industry. In sync he produced glass for display showcases, and appliances. In the early days of television Permaglass was the largest manufacturer of glass plates for the television industry. The Commercial and residential markets would eventually, require tempered and laminated glass for almost all commercial projects. For years, tempered glass for cut sizes was not practical due to the small number of local fabricators. Glass suppliers who can deliver, cost effectively small sizes prefer using an easy to cut laminated glass. either tempered or laminated were the only choices to meet CAT 1 or CAT II ASTM codes. Laminated glass was readily available for servicing local replacement requirements. independent tempering was jump started by domestic manufacturers. The ease of tempering over laminating was made possible by domestic machine manufacturers, started. The shift from small glaziers started with companies like Worcester Tempering in Worcester Mass. Norman Shulman offered next day tempering for one off in 1973. He, quickly becoming Guardians largest customer for the newly built Carlton float line. Guardian bought out Worcester Tempering, and Norman would be VP of sales for Guardian West Coast. Norman started next day tempering for full truck load buyers for Guardian's float lines, in Carlton, Corsicana, and Fresno. In addition to the 11 or 12 crates Guardian would ship overweight loads, paying the fines when if the load was overweight.
