Low iron and VIG energy efficient glass

LOW IRON GLASS SOLUTIONS

Low iron glass is made when the iron content is lowered in the silica sand batch before the glass is floated. With low iron levels the blue-green tint changes its clarity. Low iron glass provides visible light transmittance and maximum brightness over clear glass, especially in thicker panels. 

Key performance is gained by making vacuum hybrid glass units (composite) with low iron as a substrate. BIG Hybrid glass units provide the best opportunities for maximum performance Synergy NA can offer a wide array of solutions for SGHC, U-Value, VLT, light to solar heat gain, depending on project requirements. BIRD GLASS SOLUTIONS

 Birds can’t see glass.  Instead, they see whatever happens to be reflected in its mirror-like surface. Often, this is open sky or trees, which, if you’re a bird, are appealing (and perfectly safe) things to fly towards. It’s estimated that between one hundred million and one billion birds die every year in collisions with manmade structures—one of the biggest killers of migratory birds.  

 A variety of approaches, such as fritting, silk-screening, or ultraviolet coating, create a pattern that breaks up the reflectivity of the glass and alerts birds to itself.  More important than the technique used to create the pattern is its spacing: Testing has shown that the “2x4 rule” is most effective meaning that the silk, coating or markings are added across the pane, spaced two inches apart horizontally, and four inches apart vertically. Research has shown that birds will not fly through spaces less than two inches high or 4 inches wide. The best choice for this requirement is either UV From Pilkington or Arcon-  Ornilux. The UV is the best choice for invisibility. Birds see UV radiation and colors within the light spectrum While more costly of the three options UV bird friendly glass provides the best choice for esthetics.   

In Metro NY As of January 1st, 2020, all glass for retrofit or new construction must met code for Local Law 15.  All glass from grade to 75 ft must be bird friendly. Bird threat glass is determined by test deaths/100. In NY the minimum threat factor is 25. For other glass requirements Vig hybrid glass can be made with laminated bird glass for an energy efficient glass offering vacuum hybrid glass solutions. Insulated glass is in and of itself a product tried and tested. Vacuum glazing solutions with bird glass as a substrate adds unmatched heat loss solutions with bird conservation benefits.

Bird glass and VIG allows architects to meet several codes at once. Local law 97 in NYC and Local law 15 require two solutions for glazing, grade to 75 ft and rooftop rails. Synergy NA offers custom VIG make up using digitally printed glass as a substrate. We can produce high resolution ceramic art, or most any pdf on 5mm glass and use it as one of the two Lites in the 10.3mm IG.  (Max size of VIG is still 68 x 108 Energy efficient glass is produced which vacuum hybrid glass with other performance traits are added to provide the maximum performance. Synergy NA prints a variety of silk-screened decorative glass and use it to further fabricate into a VIG.  Light frit colors and certain pattern designs can cause enhanced brightness when viewed from indoors under certain daylight and background sky conditions, while dark frit colors will tend to reduce glare. Applications include transparent and translucent silk-screened glass for interior applications, including glass doors, partitions, handrails, glass ceilings, floors, bathrooms, elevator walls, shower enclosures, court walls for racket sports and sneeze guards for food service.

Back in the day large cities like Macy's showcased products for retailers in the largest glass windows possible. In NYC much of the larger plate glass for storefronts on the main avenues would require heavy thick large glass panes which would rarely break.  Today monolithic and VIG Hybrid glass units are the most energy efficient glass and window solutions available. 

If you lost a window 3”4” thick and were a bank on Madison Ave, only a few companies could set it. Some companies like Maspeth Glass in queens would stock of 3/4” 240x 312, brought by barge. They would stock 3 Lites, and when one was lost, they would replace it at costs starting $150k. Of course, you can wait 3 months for a replacement at a reasonable cost if you want to keep the window boarded. 

When laminated is used as a substrate the hybrid unit offers safety elements, enhanced by Synergy NA monolithic VIG  

Next generation composite Hybrid Composite glass insulated units will offer sound, thermal and performance not possible with existing make ups, save for triple pane units.

  • Reduced center of glass condensation at temperatures as low as -58° F
